Director

Sylvia Alloway

OUR PURPOSE:

To make drama an integral part of the Calvary Church outreach to the community, to offer the best theater possible (both religious and secular) to glorify God, and to delight our friends and neighbors, especially those who have never experienced live drama.

OUR PAST

Since 1997 we have performed two full-length non-musical plays, and two musical variety shows. Last year we produced our first full book musical, How to Succeed in Business without Really Trying to much enthusiastic response and this year achieved even more success with the comedy You Can't Take It with You We also perform a brief "chancel drama" to enhance the worship service on the third Sunday of every month.

OUR FUTURE

In the future we hope to add street performing, puppetry, and children's theater to our repertoire. We are a Christian-based organization, but you need not profess any particular creed or belief to join us.

ABOUT THE DIRECTOR

Sylvia Alloway has been directing church drama at Calvary Lutheran for almost fifteen years. She is originally from Chicago where she was a professional theater and voice-over actress. She has also taught both acting and English and has published articles, plays, and religious materials in newspapers, magazines and devotional books. Ms. Alloway also performs as Clarissa the Clown in schools and churches. Dale, her husband of twenty-three years, and Steven, their son, often "clown around" with Clarissa. Her goal for Spirit OnStage is to spread the love of God and the love of theater to as many people as possible.

ABOUT CALVARY LUTHERAN CHURCH

Calvary Lutheran has been serving the Lord and the community for over forty years. Besides regular worship services and Bible studies, we have a youth group, a ladies' craft class, and four different musical groups. We also rent our facilities to Around the Korner, a federally funded children's center that provides day care for poor working families. In addition to his preaching and teaching duties, our pastor, Rev. Bill Snipes, runs Calvary's professional counseling ministry, and was recently voted "The Person We Are Most Thankful For" by his congregation. He enthusiastically supports Spirit OnStage.

THIS MONTH'S CHANCEL DRAMA

All Walks of Life: Wisdom from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Adapted by Sylvia Alloway READER 1: We [sometimes] wonder if [our moral decay] is due to the fact that we don't know enough. But it can't be that. READER 2: We know more about mathematics, about science, about social science, and philosophy than we've ever known in any period of the world's history. So it can't be because we don't know enough. READER 1: And then we wonder if it is due to the fact…that we have not made enough progress scientifically. Well then, it can't be that. … READER 3: Today it's possible to eat breakfast in New York City and supper in London, England. Man's scientific genius has been amazing. READER 1: The great problem facing modern man is that, the means by which we live have outdistanced the spiritual ends for which we live. READER 2: So we find ourselves caught in a messed-up world READER 1: We are challenged to really believe that all men are created equal. And don't misunderstand that. READER 3: It does not mean that all men are created equal in terms of native endowment, in terms of intellectual capacity- READER 2: It doesn't mean that. READER 1: There are certain bright stars in the human firmament in every field. READER 2: It doesn't mean that every musician is equal to a Beethoven. READER 3: It doesn't mean that every physicist is equal to an Einstein. READER 2: It does not mean that every literary figure in history is equal to [Byron] and Shakespeare… READER 1: What it does mean is that all men are equal in intrinsic worth. READER 2: [So] if it falls to your lot to be a dishwasher, wash like Michelangelo painted pictures, READER 3: Like Shakespeare wrote poetry, READER 2: Like Beethoven composed music… READER 1: Wash so well that all the host of heaven and earth will have to pause and say, ALL: "There lived a great dishwasher, who did his job well."
